Arthritis is a major cause of lost work time and serious disability for many people. Although arthritis is mainly a disease of adults, children may also have it. Arthritis literally means "inflammation of a joint." Osteoarthritis may be induced by injury or normal wear and tear, while rheumatoid arthritis is caused by autoimmune disease. Arthritis causes swelling, pain and stiffness in the joint and may result in long-lasting disability if not treated. Treatments for arthritis may include medication, exercise and therapy, or surgery.

As a rheumatologist, Dr. Deveshwar deals mainly with clinical problems involving joints, soft tissues and connective tissues. She treats arthritis, musculoskeletal pain disorders and osteoporosis. Many rheumatic disorders are triggered by autoimmune disease. Dr. Deveshwar keeps abreast of the large body of recent scientific research and advances in treating these autoimmune diseases, including advances in biologic agents and other medications.
